Hull residents took to social media to voice their disappointment at the Christmas lights switch on.

Taking place in Queen Victoria square, thousands of people gathered to watch Lord Mayor John Hewitt, who was joined by brave Bransholme youngster Daniel Carter to get Hull’s Christmas period up and running.

Combined with a firework display in Queens Gardens, the city centre was buzzing with anticipation leading up to the event, with many voicing their complaints after.

Many of the disgruntled views regarded the poor positioning of the fireworks, making it difficult to see both the lights switch on and the display.

With the city of culture year set to end, expectations were high of a spectacular show to round off the celebrations. The crowds that attended the switch on were seemingly left disappointed, with a sense of a missed opportunity to showcase the city’s year in the spotlight.
