3 February 2017

Whitefriargate’s shops have said business has improved, despite the closure of other stores in the area, writes Danielle Hayes.

Kapow gift shop and The Works bookshop have both said more people have started to visit their businesses in the last month.

However, many shops down Whitefriargate have gone out of business and relocated. The shops that have closed down in the last few months include YMCA and British Heart Foundation. Marks and Spencer and HSBC bank are also planning to close their branches down the street.

Beth Mars, Kapow’s assistant manager, said: “A lot of people that we know are closing but, it hasn’t affected business,

“Last month was very slow, but now people are starting to visit now it’s getting warmer and we’re getting more people¬†in.”

The Works’ manager, Lisa Harrison, also agreed that more people have been visiting their shop in the last month. She said the first week of City of Culture was “brilliant”, as more people came into the city centre.

Ms Harrison added the past 18 months have been “hard work” for traders, due to the ¬£25m renovations in the city centre.
